 "Nicely designed water filter" 2009-08-03
By Cultivated Reader (San Francisco, CA United States)
I have purchased two of these filters. I really like the design. It's great that if fits under the faucet head instead of sticking up. I like the three types of water sprays. It filters nicely.

The only drawbacks are that for whatever reason we've had some trouble getting a nice seal. Originally it did seal well to the faucet and I think the problem is mostly likely with my own faucet and not the Brita filter.

One thing that was nice [...]. [...]

 "Works Great" 2009-07-18

I live in a very old building with cast iron pipes. The sediment and taste of the water was just awful, not to mention what it was doing to my coffeemaker and humidifier. This system works great at removing sediment and off tastes to my water.

 "Good overall" 2009-06-15
By H. VanAssche (Michigan)
I have had this product for I think about 6 months now and I still haven't had to change the filter. When I first got it, I did have to buy an attatchment from the hardware store for my faucet. My faucet is the kind that is supposed to look like an old farmhouse faucet, so it was a little small. The attachment was only around $1 so it wasn't a big deal. The filter does leak every now and then, epecially when I use hot water, but it doesn't leak enough to bother me. It still does what it needs to do and it saves me a ton of money on bottled water.

"Alternative to bottled and huge bottles of water?" 2009-06-13
By Richard E. Powers (Boston, MA)
We shall see. We've had this tap filter for about a month and so far very good. It was moronically easy to install on a fairly unusual kitchen tap and blends in nicely. Seems to be a fairly compact unit but I have nothing to compare to. Water coming through the filter compares nicely with the huge bottles of water we still get but will probably phase out and cancel. Thus far, I would recommend this unit.

"Good filter for kitchen sink tap" 2009-05-10
By E815User (MA United States)
This is a good water filter for the kitchen sink tap. The knob provides 3 settings, Brita filtered water, shower, or plain. I like the shower setting for washing dishes etc. The horizontal design provides a low hieght filter so does not obstruct the sink.

"Use Plumber's Tape to Secure the Connector" 2009-09-15
By Wildcard
I have been using this system for over 2 years--the indicator battery has even been completely drained but it matters not because I replace the filter every 3 months no matter what. The reason is, besides getting extremely slow water stream from the filter, you are putting yourself more danger if you overuse the filter. Because the stuff the filter has been filtering clogs it up and if you overuse it you are pretty much drinking those accumulated and harmful stuff.

Now for those who complain about the plastic connector, I believe they over-tighten the connector to worn it out. Use some Plumber's Tape (2 to 3 layers around the faucet tip should do) before you put the connector on and do not over-tighten. You can get the tape from a hardware store and it costs about less than two dollars for a small roll. And it will last the connector forever with no leaks, no falling off, etc..

"Brita 42201 On Tap Filtration System, White" 2009-09-12
By Frank A. Frandi (Panhandle Florida)
The Brita 42201 On Tap Filtration System I feel is just OK.

I have a brita pitcher system that I feel works better and uses cheaper filters that also last longer.

It works fine, but the adapters for the sink are made of plastic and stripped out very easy.

I had to go to Ace hardware and with the patient salesman we found a metal adapter that

worked and solved my problem (add $4.95 for the metal adapter).

The filters also do not last any where near as long as the ones in my Brita pitcher system and are a little pricey.

All in all with the metal adapter this filter system works fine.

"Never Had a Problem With It--Better Than PUR" 2009-09-04
By Poogy
After using PUR faucet-mounted water filters for years, and having to replace them every year or two due to cracks or leaks, I finally tried Brita. Much better design! Easier to replace, no leaks, no cracks, same water quality. And through Amazon, better price.

UPDATE:

A year later--no problems so far. One quirk of the Brita, however, is that when it's in filtering mode the stream of water is quite narrow, and forceful, so it can easily bounce off whatever it's hitting and spray around. Filling ice cube trays, for example, requires a little practice to actually have the water stay in the compartments instead of spraying everywhere else. But really, this is nitpicking. Still prefer it to PUR. And it also takes up a little less space under the faucet.

SECOND UPDATE:

After a year and a half, I accidentally broke the unit by shaking the water out of some greens over the sink and hitting it. Didn't take much, I'm afraid. But I replaced it with the same unit. The reviews of the unit itself are filled with angry one-stars complaining the thing pops off the sink, but those are ONLY FOR FAUCETS THREADED ON THE INSIDE. Mine is not, and I've never had a problem. The replacement unit screwed right on, and stays on. (Some reviewers like the Culligan. I haven't tried it, but it has no indicator telling you when to change filters. That seems like a significant feature to me--I don't want to have to keep track of when I last replaced it, and be constantly either throwing away filters with use left on them or drinking unfiltered water for some unknown period of time.)

 "Improved it isn't" 2009-09-02
By Sharon (Pearland, TX United States)
I have used the Brita system for years without problems. I decided to buy a new unit because my old one had managed to start looking rough. I ordered this unit from Amazon and within 2 weeks it actually fell off of my faucet. I put it back on and it stayed on around a week. Then it would not go back on. The plastic threads inside the filter are very poorly made. They were stripped out completely. Since I live where the water isn't so great, I got in my car and went to the store and bought another one. The reason I did this is because I have at least 3 Brita filters that I didn't want to go to waste. If this one does the same thing, I will not buy another.

"Great Filter, but design flaw with easy fix" 2009-08-11
By Chitwood (Boston, MA)
Yes the adapter stinks, if you e-mail Brita they will send you out a metal connector with longer threads free of charge as well as a new unit if yours was damaged due to the cheap plastic connector, no receipt necessary. I sent the e-mail and it took about 2 weeks for the response and to have the piece shipped as well as a brand new unit, that's not bad. I lost two units because of this design flaw but they replaced one and gave me the metal adapter and the unit has worked great ever since. I lost $30.00 cause of the one unit, but you can't put a price on the safety of what you drink and Brita is a GREAT filter. Out of all the other units similiar there connection method is pretty much the same. If you buy one on Amazon just hit your local hardware store before you install it and you can find the metal connector, its cheep like 1 to 2 dollars.

I ended up going with the Culligan under the counter water filter in the long run. It freed up my faucet which the spout was rather short, the whole this cost me $80, but that is with $30 in extra parts, I bought flex lines with compression fittings on the end for easy install, took about ten minutes. With the Culligan I was able to drill through my stainless steel sink and install a separate faucet. The Culligan filter is good, no doubt, but Brita definitely makes a better filter, no doubt, they don't offer the under the counter device that's why I went with Culligan.

"I love instant hot water but this is my second ISE tank in ten years." 2009-09-16
By R. Ito (Huntington Beach, CA United States)
I had the original white metal tank unit ten years ago but it corroded and failed about five years in. I cut it open with a sawzall and the tank was full of mineral debris and had leaked.

I replaced it with the newer gray plastic bodied unit with SS tank and plumbed a water filtration unit to it. Five years later the water flows but is no longer hot. The heating element is now bad and trips the electrical breaker.

I hate replacing this thing every five years but I can't live without it. I love having instant hot water for hot drinks and for help with cleaning stubborn messes on pots and pans. I just wish the reliablity was better.

 "Great Replacement Tank!" 2009-06-08
By D. Lee (CA USA)
I had to replace my tank because my old one died and started leaking, which I've had in place since 2003. I'm a huge fan of the insinkerator products because of the convenience of the hot water dispenser and space saving aspect on my countertop. Install was an absolute snap - the only difficulty was getting under the sink area itself, which once my husband fit under there, reattaching the 3 tubes from the dispenser head was as easy as 1-2-3. For added leak protection, he fit a small bucket around the base of the tank with a cable looped over the top of the unit to hold the bucket in place.

I recall the warning sign was when the hot water would sputter when depressing the hot button. Didn't think too much of it until water started building up around my garbage pale under the sink, so I guess I'll watch for that in the future.

This unit is great with the adjustable temp setting and it certainly is quiet.

We use the Insinkerator instant hot water and filtered water all the time. Our original hot water tank cracked and leaked. This was a simple easy fix. I really didnt need the additional filter, but they are always usable as a replacement in the next year. The filters are spendy so the combined product made for a good value.

"Avoid InSinkErator hot water dispensers have gone through two of these in three years." 2009-05-03

Decent performance, but I have had two (2) of these tanks fail on me within three years.

They will start to leak slowly and will ruin your floor and cabinets below due to slow drip water damage.

Avoid InSinkErator hot water tanks. Their garbage disposals are very good, but would never buy nor recommend their hot water dispensers (hot tap).

This water tap is made of cheap plastic. The tap broke during installation. We had to go to Home Depot to buy a new water dispenser so we could finish the install and get some filtered water.

If they had only spent a few more dollars to make metal dispenser maybe it would be ok.

Filtered water very well from Nov 2008 - Aug 2009. Plastic nipple has broken from no apparent cause, sending a cascade of filtered water from my base cabinet down the basement stairs.  "Great Product!" 2009-08-19
By K. Gotham
I purchased this water filter about two months ago and am very pleased. I chose it because of the poor reviews I had seen of the Aquasana water filter. I was tired of paying $50 a month for bottled water and I wanted a high quality and dependable filter that fit under the sink. Being all thumbs, I was concerned that the installation would take a while or I would puncture a hose and flood the kitchen. The installation was very easy and took about 1/2 hour. The directions are very clear and detailed. The filter is not light (a couple of pounds) and is made of metal. I highly recommend this water filter.

Followed directions to install under my sink. I am not the handiest person around when it comes to plumbing, but I had very little trouble installing the filter. I especially like the easy way you can change the filter unlike other brands I have had that require a special wrench to loosen the filters. The water quality has definitly improved. It remains to be seen how long the filter lasts since I just installed it although the manufacturer says change every six months.

 "Culligan is better!" 2009-07-23
By LawyerMom (USA)
I don't know why, but I went through THREE Pur faucet filters before finally chucking them in the garbage and buying the Culligan Faucet Filter. The Pur filters were always leaking from the connectors. And if you tried to adjust them, you'd end up stripping the plastic from the connector and being left with an unsightly, scraped up piece of plastic on your sink. And if you do manage to get the Pur filter off to try to repair the leak with plumber's tape, good luck getting the filter back on again.

But the Culligan's connector is made of metal (whereas both the filter housing and the connector of the Pur filter was made of plastic), so it's easy to get the Culligan filter on and off the sink without any leaking whatsoever!

I also love how easy it is to replace the filters! Just a twist of the fingers and it comes right out. I once got a deep cut from replacing a Pur filter where the edge of the cap sliced right into my hand while I was twisting it off, since there were no finger grips to hold onto.

The Culligan is also nice b/c it doesn't sit as low as the Pur filter, so you can put tall bottles or water pitchers under it with more ease. And the quality of the filter and the taste of the water is the same, if not better than the Pur filter. My main complaint against the Culligan is that it doesn't have an indicator to show you when to change the filter; they tell you just to mark it on your calendar, when to change the filter next.

One last hesitation I had about switching over was the fact that I didn't see replacement Culligan filters readily available in the stores. Pur replacement filters are sold in bulk at Target and my local warehouse store. But once, when Amazon was running a buy 1, get 1 half off sale on the Culligan filters, I saw that buying them one by one on Amazon.com was STILL cheaper than buying the Pur filters in bulk at the warehouse store. Add to that the fact that the Culligan filter is cheaper to begin with and you won't have to waste money replacing it periodically when it breaks down and you just have a product that makes good "dollars and sense".

"Like the others say, a terrible product." 2009-09-01

Despite it's seemingly universal design, the included adapter won't fit your sink and once installed it will work for a few minutes, giving you the glimmering illusion of future days of cups quickly filled with filtered water. But soon it will pry loose under the pressure, will start spewing and pouring water everywhere before falling off and breaking any dishes in your sink.

I've really, really struggled to make this work. Seriously. I wanted it to work. But ultimately a miserable product and $60 (incl extra filters) forever lost.

The threads inside this device are plastic. The threads on the piece that attaches to the sink are also plastic. Very bad design. An extra twist and the threads will become ruined, the filter will end up falling off your faucet.

Designs in previous years never had this problem. Back to PUR, which still includes metal threaded pieces (yes, on the device itself as well).
